Non-CS to CS transition via GATE CS/IT

'High Risk - High Reward' game

  • Generally, students from ECE stream who have appeared for GATE CS/IT are eligible in almost all the colleges of India for masters in CSE or related streams.
  • Earlier, very less institutes used to allow Non-CSE and Non-ECE students with valid GATE CS/IT score to pursue masters in CSE. Right now, a lot of institutes allow students from streams like Mechanical, Civil, Biotechnology, etc. who have cracked GATE CS to pursue masters in CSE.
  • Generally, Artificial Intelligence (AI) or Data Science (DS) related courses allow all branch students who have appeared for GATE CS.

Comments:

  • COAP (Common Offer Acceptance Portal) is  used for admission in IITs.
  • CCMT (Centralized Counselling for MTech) is used for admission in NITs and some IIITs.
  • After registering for CCMT, you will get the list of all the colleges in which you are eligible as per the eligibility criteria.
  • Eligibility criteria may vary from year to year.
  • Earlier, IIT Patna used to allow Non-CSE and Non-ECE students also for MTech CSE in case if the student has appeared for GATE CS/IT but now, IIT Patna do not allow such students for masters pursuing masters in CSE.
  • Earlier, IIIT Bangalore used to allow Non-CSE and Non-ECE students also for MTech CSE in case if the student has appeared for GATE CS/IT but now, IIIT Bangalore allow such students for MS (Research) Data Science course only, not for MTech CSE.
  • In case of low GATE CS score, you still have the chance of pursuing MTech AI at University of Hyderabad or MTech CSE at Thapar University or VIT Vellore.
  • If you really want a great college even after getting a low GATE CS score, you will have to appear for PGEE (Post Graduate Entrance Examination) which is conducted by IIIT Hyderabad for admission in masters courses at IIIT Hyderabad. Some folks say, "IIIT Hyderabad has the best coding culture among all the institutes in India. Coding is in the air of IIIT Hyderabad." Also, IIIT Hyderabad's average package is almost similar to that of IIT Bombay.
  • Admission criteria in IIIT Delhi is somewhat different. IIIT Delhi has GATE as well as non-GATE seats. For GATE seats, IIIT Delhi gives 50% weightage to bachelors percentage (CGPA is converted to percentage as per the rules of respective university) and 50% weightage to GATE score. IIIT Delhi does not have any kind of reservation. Everyone is treated as general category student. So, admission is only on the basis of merit.
  • If you are from Non-CSE and Non-ECE stream and appeared for GATE CS, then you are not eligible to apply for ISRO Scientist Examination, BARC OCES / DGFS Examination, and other PSU exams. Generally, students prefer doing masters in premium institutes of India after cracking GATE CS instead of doing jobs immediately because of the amazing research and placement opportunities while pursuing masters.
